Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are remakes of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, which were released in 2002 on the GameBoy Advance. Pokemon Omega Ruby came out in 2014 and is considered a part of the sixth generation of the video game series. The game is a great source of nostalgia and almost takes us straight back to 2002 (with better graphics, of course).
Both games came out on the Nintendo 3DS, one of Nintendo’s most favored consoles. They boast drastically improved graphics, but retain most elements from the original story. The changes made in the sixth generation of the Pokemon video game series are also evident in Pokemon Omega Ruby 3DS ROM. Given the fact that three generations stand between them and their predecessors, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have much to offer to those looking to enjoy the story again.

Pokemon Omega Ruby Story
As the game is essentially a retelling of Pokemon Ruby’s original story, not much has changed. However, some new developments have been made that potentially change the game’s course, but are a bit too much of a spoiler alert to mention here. The Omega Ruby edition also features some new side quests which introduce new characters and bid the player save their planet from a gloomy fate. Download the ROM and play the game to see all the new story changes!
The Standard Premise
Pokemon Omega Ruby’s protagonist is, obviously, you. The main objective is to catch all the Pokemon in the game and defeat the Elite Four. They are a group of four very skilled Pokemon trainers. However, that’s not all. The player character also tries to stop a criminal organization’s efforts to take over the region.
The player starts by arriving at their family’s new estate in Littleroot Town, a village situated on the Hoenn island. You begin your Pokemon journey by saving Professor Birch from a wild Pokemon, where you choose one of three starters: Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip. Of course, your chosen Pokemon assists you in defending Professor Birch.
Encountering the Villains
After the ordeal with Professor Birch, the protagonist travels around the Hoenn region intending to complete their Pokedex and defeat the gym leaders of the Hoenn Pokemon League. Along the way, you encounter Team Magma, a group who wish to use the power of the legendary Pokemon to shape the world as they desire. The Pokemon in question is Primal Groudon, a massive dinosaur-like Pokemon filled with energy that takes the shape of magma. It is said that Primal Groudon creates new land with each step it takes. Team Magma means to use this ability to create new landmasses and dry up oceans with the intent of allowing mankind to progress.
Now it’s up to the protagonist (that’s you!) to stop their scheme and prevent Primal Groudon’s power being used for evil.
The “Delta Episode” Side Quests
The Delta Episode side quests are a new addition to the 3DS version of the game, introducing new characters and objectives. Upon meeting Zinnia, Steven Stone, and Professor Cozmo, the protagonist has a new quest: to stop a meteor from crashing into the planet. This requires capturing the legendary Pokemon Rayquaza. It’s a fun little side quest specific to the 3DS remakes of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, and definitely worth checking out!
Game Features of Pokemon Omega Ruby
As we mentioned before, both games came out on the 3DS. However, most of the new features are available in this game thanks to the changes from later generations. This, of course, doesn’t mean that they haven’t retained their original features. There’s also a few new aspects that are worthy of mention for Pokemon Omega Ruby 3DS ROM.
Fourth Generation Benefits
The fourth generation of Pokemon games introduced a physical/special split. These two categories determine the type of damage a Pokemon deals. The physical category features types such as poison, ghost, and flying. On the other hand, the special category has types such as fire, water, psychic, etc. This means Pokemon can now use moves of wider variety.
Fifth Generation Benefits
One of the main things Pokemon Omega Ruby pulled from the fifth generation is the unlimited TM usage. The TM, or Technical Machines, are a system used to teach Pokemon new moves. These moves sometimes cannot be learned through other means. They can also be crucial to progressing through the games. The Technical Machines could only be used once prior to the fifth generation. In this game, though, you can use them infinitely.
The fifth generation also introduced triple battles. Triple battles are a battle system where the player can send out three Pokemon to fight. This system was introduced in Pokemon Black and White.
Sixth Generation Benefits
With the release of Pokemon X and Y, features such as Mega Evolution and Super Training were introduced to the games. These would later also become features in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Mega Evolutions are transformations that a select few Pokemon can achieve. They are also temporary. Super Training is a method of training that allows the player to train their Pokemon on the touch screen. Super Training can be done anywhere and at any time. It’s also important to mention that Super Training can only raise a Pokemon’s stats, not its levels.
Features Unique to Pokemon Omega Ruby
An interesting aspect of Pokemon Omega Ruby is definitely the Primal Reversion for Groudon. While Primal Reversion is similar to Mega Evolutions, you can have as many on your team as you like. You can also have a Pokemon with active Primal Reversion on the same team as a Pokemon with an active Mega Evolution.
Another fun feature is the ability to fly around Hoenn on Latios or Latias. During this, players can see “mirage spots” where they can catch Pokemon that you can’t find in other areas in the Hoenn region. There also may be some legendary Pokemon from previous generations hiding there!
How to Play Pokemon Omega Ruby 3DS ROM
As with any Pokemon game, the objective is to fill up your Pokedex and defeat all the Gym Leaders! Capture Pokemon using PokeBalls, and participate in battles against other Pokemon. When battling other Pokemon, you can use items, abilities, or you can flee if you don’t want to battle. It’s worth mentioning that you can’t flee in battles against trainers. When a Pokemon’s HP goes all the way down, it faints and can’t continue battling until you revive it. Of course, there’s also the important aspect of evolving your companions by getting enough XP and leveling them up.
Upon downloading the ROM, players may choose to emulate it using Citra or play it on their 3DS. While the 3DS commands are fairly obvious, Citra’s keybinds for each corresponding 3DS command are a bit different. It’s definitely worth checking them out if you plan to emulate the game.
