Pokémon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire Story
The games mainly follow the original Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire’s story, with a few key changes. For example, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the two leaders of each of the antagonist groups use the correct orbs to trigger the Primal Reversion for Groudon and Kyogre. There is also a new side quest that the remakes have to offer to the player.
As with each Pokémon game, the player’s goal is to complete their PokéDex and defeat the Elite Four. Along the way, the protagonist finds out about Team Magma (in the Omega Ruby version) or Team Aqua (in the Alpha Sapphire version). They are a criminal organization that plans to capture legendary Pokémon to use them to change the world according to their vision.
Saving Professor Birch
The game takes place in the Hoenn region, a fictional island in the world of Pokémon based on the real-world Japanese island of Kyushu. The protagonist moves to this region due to their father’s new position as leader of the Petalburg City Gym. Upon arriving at their new home in the village of Littleroot Town, they soon find themselves rescuing Professor Birch. The Professor, a prominent scientist in this region, has been attacked by a wild Pokémon. The player can choose one of three starter Pokémon specific to this region to help defend against the wild Pokémon.
A Quest to Defeat the Gym Leaders
After rescuing the Professor, the player receives the Pokémon they chose as their starter Pokémon. They later journey to complete their PokéDex with the hopes of defeating the Elite Four, a group of exceptionally skilled Pokémon trainers. Of course, not everything is so simple. The protagonist soon finds themselves making the effort to stop the criminal organizations that plan to use legendary Pokémon for their own goals.
Team Magma and Team Aqua
The player encounters these two organizations in the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire versions of the game, respectively. Team Magma’s goal is to capture Primal Groudon, a dinosaur-like Pokémon which can dry oceans and create new landmasses wherever it steps. They want to use these landmasses to allow humanity to progress further. Team Aqua, on the other hand, means to capture Primal Kyogre and use its power to flood the lands. By doing this, they hope to revert the world to a prehistoric state, thus allowing Pokémon to move freely.
The “Delta Episode” Side Quests
These side quests are only available in the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire remakes. They involve the protagonist working with some new characters to prevent a meteor from crashing onto their planet. This, of course, requires the involvement of a legendary Pokémon – it wouldn’t be a Pokémon game if every problem wasn’t somehow solved with their help. The Pokémon in question is Rayquaza, and the team ventures out to find it to save their planet from a grim fate.
Features of Pokémon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire
As previously mentioned, the Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire ROM hack intends to enhance the experience of the player while going through the story. You can see this via several new features, and some that have been reworked to provide a challenge. You can see the most notable changes below.
New and Improved Trainers
The trainer changes are reflected in several different ways. The creators introduced a harsher level curve, and also balanced them to the experience point share. They also created all-new trainer teams and edited some of the rematches featured in the game. Trainers were given access to Mega Evolutions, as well. The Gym Leaders, along with some of the new trainers, also now have six Pokémon in their rosters. Alternate Battle Types are also more prominent in the world.
New Wild Pokémon Features
Possibly the most important change is the fact that some Pokémon’s rarity has been adjusted in several areas. Every species of Pokémon in the wild can hold items. The Foreign Pokémon usually available after you complete the game are now available from the beginning. The creators have also done us a favor by optimizing hordes to enable players early EV training without much trouble.
Some items have had their prices drastically changed, be it upwards or downwards. Revives, for example, have increased in price to discourage players from using them too often in battle. The PokéMart has replaced items that have no use in the game. The Sacred Ash item, as well as some competitive consumables, can now be found in standard PokéMarts. Sacred Ash has a new function as a Max Revive. It can raise the entire party but is only available for use outside of battle.
New Methods of Evolution
Some Pokémon which usually evolve through trading are now able to evolve through other methods. These methods usually involve the Pokémon holding a certain item, sometimes during a certain time of day. Other methods include the Pokémon simply reaching a certain level, or learning certain moves. Players who preferred the trading method, though, still have it available to them.
How to Play Pokémon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire
It’s worth mentioning that you need to have the original copy of the game to be able to play these ROM hacks. If you plan to play the game on the Nintendo 3DS, you also need to download Luma3DS version 7.0 or higher. It’s easy to install and you can do it with any 3DS. Emulating the game on Citra is a slightly different story, though, if only for the different keybindings. Of course, you can change these keybindings to provide a more comfortable experience while playing. The installation process is pretty much the same, though, and this ROM download shouldn’t give you trouble!
After downloading the ROM hack, simply launching Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire will show you the modified versions of the game – Pokémon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire. You can check this by simply looking at the logo displayed on the title screen.
